Authorities charged a 20-year-old Texas man on Monday with attempted murder and attempted arson. Officials say he tossed a device similar to a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman before threatening the company’s nearby offices.
Anti-AI Manifesto
According to a federal affidavit, Daniel Moreno-Gama also seemingly authored a text expressing hostility toward artificial intelligence and its perceived dangers to society. While the filing noted that this paperwork listed contact details for various industry leaders and stakeholders, prosecutors refrained from identifying those individuals publicly.
A federal affidavit notes that Mr Moreno-Gama wrote in the filing that he needed to lead by example and prove the sincerity of his message if he intended to urge others to carry out crimes and killings.
Within the document, Mr Moreno-Gama wrote, “If I am going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message.”
Since the summer of 2024, Instagram and Substack profiles linked to Mr Moreno-Gama had been posting warnings regarding artificial intelligence. These same accounts frequently pointed followers toward academic articles and books written by experts in the field of AI safety.
An Instagram post from December claimed that death is certain if immediate action isn’t taken. By January, a piece on the Substack account examined the “existential risk” of AI, arguing that leaders in the industry “appear to lack strong morals.” That essay further asserted that “these people are almost nothing like you,” describing them as “sociopathic/psychopathic” and claiming that Altman is “consistently reported to be a pathological liar.”
The San Francisco Attacks
Mr Moreno-Gama is dealing with prosecution at both the state and federal levels, which includes a charge for having an unregistered firearm. Although the police didn’t discover a weapon on him during his arrest, federal officials noted that the assault might be classified as domestic terrorism.

Mr Moreno-Gama made the trip from Texas to California this month and targeted Mr Altman’s residence on Friday, the federal affidavit says. Officials stated that after he lobbed the explosive at the home early that morning, he headed toward the OpenAI headquarters.
Upon arriving, Mr Moreno-Gama struck the glass entrance with a chair and was confronted by guards while carrying a container of kerosene, the federal affidavit says. Security personnel reported that he declared his intent “to burn it down and kill anyone inside.” Local police took him into custody soon after.
Severe Legal Consequences
The F.B.I. confirmed that agents searched Mr Moreno-Gama’s residence in Spring, Texas, on Monday. During a press briefing that same day, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated that the 11 counts filed in California—which include the attempted murder of Mr Altman—could result in a prison term ranging from 19 years to life.

Federal prosecutors brought two more charges against Mr Moreno-Gama for the assault on Mr Altman’s house, according to Craig Missakian, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California. These federal counts could similarly result in many years behind bars. Mr Missakian noted that if the proof indicates Mr Moreno-Gama carried out these strikes to influence public policy or pressure government figures, the case will be handled as domestic terrorism.
Unrelated Shooting Incident
During the press briefing, local authorities mentioned that a shooting close to Mr Altman’s house on Sunday seemed unconnected to Friday’s incident. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew explained that two individuals, who are now in custody, were driving “past a residence when the gunfire erupted.” He confirmed that no one sustained injuries, adding that while there is currently no proof linking this event to Friday’s case, both investigations are ongoing.
