Valkyrae & Other Top Creators Criticize New Twitter Verification System

Elon Musk has come under fire from popular streamers including Ludwig, Valkyrae, and more for changing the platform’s verification system.

Elon Musk now officially owns Twitter. The Tesla CEO introduced a myriad of changes to the social media platform. However, the most notable change includes a drastic shift in how verification works.

Originally, users would have to apply for verification. A verified account indicated it is handled by its legitimate owner. This was ideally reserved for journalists, major companies, and public figures.

However, Musk’s new system allows any user to purchase verification for $8 a month. This new system will start on November 9 via Twitter Blue.

The Twitter Blue verification does not clarify whether the users had purchased their checkmark or the account was verified beforehand as an “official” account, a report by Dexerto points out.

So, Musk rolled back that decision. Now, some previously verified users claim their verified tab is teeming with Twitter Blue subscribers rather than previously verified mutual contacts.

Valkyrae Expresses Annoyance About New Twitter Verification System

YouTube star Ludwig and other content creators, as well as streamers recently spoke out against Twitter’s verification changes.

“I realize the only reason I liked the checkmark was because the verification tab acted like a mutuals tab,” he wrote. “Getting big likes is cool and all, but as a dude who plays video games in his basement most of the time, it’s nice to keep up relationships with friends I know.”

Valkyrae wrote, “Why [are] there a bunch of anime pfp accounts saying ‘Hey lol’ in my verified tab?!”

FaZe Banks also indicated that his previously verified status is no longer important thanks to the new Twitter Blue system.

“I’m not exactly sure what sparked your distaste for the OG blue check mark, but for some of us, it represented some level of achievement/ validation,” he said.

“Feels a little participation trophy-esque. I was told I was a loser / moron for playing video games and tweeting so much. This helped.”

Nevertheless, Twitter is likely to continue to evolve under its new ownership. Share your thoughts on the new Twitter verification changes in the comments below.
