iPhone 17 Pro To Get Under-Display Face ID, Ross Young Says

According to a new report, Apple iPhone 17 Pro will probably adopt a truly full-screen design with an under-display Face ID.

Reliable display analyst Ross Young believes Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro will come with an under-display Face ID technology. This feature could facilitate a truly full-screen design by eliminating the need for a notch.

Despite using under-display Face ID technology, Young noted that the phone will feature a circular cutout for the selfie camera. The American tech giant will reportedly stick to this design until 2027;s iPhone Pro series (aka iPhone 19 Pro/Max) becomes official.

iPhone 17 Pro To Feature Under-Display Face ID

The word on the street is that the iPhone 19 Pro/Max will have a truly “full-screen” appearance, with the camera and the two facial recognition sensors concealed under the screen. The delay has been attributed to “sensor issues.”

To recap, the feature was originally slated to arrive on 2024’s iPhone 16 Pro models. In the meantime, Apple is sparing no effort to fix issues that are stopping the company from making the front camera work seamlessly with the under-display camera solution.

Past leaks claim the under-display camera will only house a 4MP camera sensor, which is considerably lower compared to the 12MP sensor used in the iPhone 14 Pro. This could negatively impact the image quality.

Also, the screen’s transmittance is low since the iPhone has a Super Retina display with a pixel density of around 400-500 PPI. The light received by the under-display front shooter is also minimal, which is likely to impact the image quality.

Apple can reduce the PPI of the under-display front camera area to enhance transmittance. However, the difference in PPI between the display and the under-display front camera area could lead to the “screen door effect” which causes the screen to show visible pixelation, according to a GizmoChina report.

Still, Apple is likely to develop a flawless under-display camera solution for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, which could provide a truly full-screen design without compromising on picture quality.
