Popular messaging service Telegram unexpectedly vanished from Apple’s App Store this week, sparking widespread confusion among millions of iPhone users worldwide. The sudden removal coincided with escalating legal friction involving the platform’s billionaire founder, Pavel Durov, and Russian authorities.
While the app has since been restored to iOS devices, questions remain over what triggered the temporary blackout.
Puzzling Message
Controversy seems to follow Telegram wherever it goes. Apple briefly pulled the service from its online marketplace, only to bring it back a short while later. Once iPhone users could access it again, the firm published a puzzling message on social media platform X.
Writing on X, Telegram poked fun at Apple regarding its brief ban from the store. The platform quoted the well-known line, ‘Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated.’ It accompanied the statement with an apple emoji, pointing directly to the tech giant.

Before the fix, visitors to Telegram’s listing on the Apple App Store saw a notice stating, ‘The page you’re looking for can’t be found.’ The team subsequently verified that the service was back online, though they did not explain why it vanished in the first place.
What prompted Apple to take Telegram down originally is still anyone’s guess. Neither company has shed light on the incident, as Apple continues to remain silent.
Wanted List
This temporary outage coincided with intense pressure facing both Telegram and its billionaire chief executive, Pavel Durov, from Russian and Western officials alike. Positioning himself as a defender of free expression, Durov has frequently clashed with international authorities and the Kremlin over the years. Just last week, Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, placed his name on international wanted lists after alleging he supported terrorist operations.

In response, the Russian-born entrepreneur shared a picture on Telegram’s official X profile showing himself making an obscene middle-finger gesture. He has long condemned earlier efforts by the Kremlin to censor his platform, framing them as direct assaults on freedom of speech.
Exam Fraud
Debuting in 2013, Telegram claims a global audience of over 1 billion monthly active users. Beyond direct messaging and public broadcast channels, the service supports massive group discussions. While Meta limits WhatsApp group sizes to 1,024 participants, Telegram permits up to 200,000 members in a single chat—a scale that specialists warn allows misleading information to circulate rapidly.
Indian authorities also temporarily blocked Telegram in June ahead of the NEET re-examination. Officials took action out of fears that fraudsters could exploit the platform to disseminate false information and attempt to sell fraudulent exam papers to candidates.
