Tech entrepreneurs from Russia are currently working on a photo-sharing application for the domestic market. This app will carry the Rossgram moniker and will try to be a substitute for Instagram.
Russians To Launch Rossgram As An Instagram Replacement
To recall, Russian authorities blocked Instagram earlier this month. According to a post on Rossgram’s website (via Gadgets360), the app is set to launch on March 28.
Moreover, it will offer a slew of additional functions like paid access to some content, crowdfunding, and more.
“My partner Kirill Filimonov and our group of developers were already ready for this turn of events and decided not to miss the opportunity to create a Russian analogue of a popular social network beloved by our compatriots,” the initiative’s public relations director, Alexander Zobov, wrote on VKontakte social network.
Russia Blocks Instagram
Russian state communications regulator Roskomnadzor blocked Instagram after Meta refused to restrict messages such as “Death to the Russian invaders” on its platform.
On Sunday, the US-based technology company said it will be narrowing its content moderation policy for Ukraine to restrict calls for the death of the head of state.
To recall, Russia recently blocked Facebook. Moreover, the country has initiated a criminal investigation against Meta.
Also, prosecutors are now urging the court to deem the American tech giant an “extremist organisation”.
Zobov recently posted a photo of Rossgram on Vkontakte. The photo confirms that the Russian photo-sharing service is drawing inspiration from Instagram in terms of color scheme and layout.
Aside from that, Russia is working on its domestic technology such as AYYA T1 smartphones. The state conglomerate Rostec manufacturer these smartphones. Also, Gazprom Media introduced Yappy to compete against video-sharing platform TikTok back in November.
